Congratulations to Laura Tabrosky, our March Athlete of the Month! Laura has spent the past three years with us. Any coach would agree, athletes like Laura are what makes this job both fun and fulfilling. Not only does Laura bring a positive energy with her every time she sets foot in the gym, she also knows how to WORK. Her consistency and persistence has led to steady improvement in all aspects of her fitness, particularly in the past year. This is apparent in the daily scoreboard as Laura is Rx’ing workouts on a consistent basis. Keep up the hard work Laura, and keep bringing that energy!
1. In general, what is your background?
- I was born and raised in Palatine, a suburb of Chicago. I grew up participating in a variety of activities, mainly cheerleading, band, and choir. I attended Western Illinois University and received my Bachelors Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies in 2008, along with commissioning through Army ROTC. The military has been my sole profession since graduating WIU, and I’ve since earned my MBA through SIU. I live in Chatham with my two little boys, four-year-old Aiden and three-year-old Alex — many of you have seen them run around at the gym and have so graciously entertained them and helped to keep them alive (thank you!).
2.Age, Occupation?
- 30; I work at Camp Lincoln as a full-time Battalion Training Officer for the Illinois Army National Guard.
3. How did you get to know about CrossFit and why did you start?
- I had eaten for two full-size-people, at a minimum, while pregnant with both boys and therefore gained half of my body weight. Six months after having Alex, I was whining about not feeling like myself, and my friend Mia convinced me to come try C3. I went 3-4 times/week for the first couple of years, but have since discovered the #noonclass and no longer have an excuse when I can’t make it to the gym before work so I’ve been lucky enough to get more gym/friend time. Over the past three years, C3 has become one of the most consistent and fulfilling relationships I’ve ever had (right up there with pizza and Mexican food).
4. How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?
- I always assumed I had a decent level of fitness, mostly since I have to maintain one to keep my job. Upon beginning CrossFit, I was very humbled and quickly found plenty of areas for improvement. One of the many great things about CrossFit though is that it (along with the community) makes it so much fun to work hard to improve. C3 makes me WANT to go to the gym, not HAVE to go to the gym; I realize that it’s a privilege, and going to the gym really makes my day. I’ve learned to identify and strive for specific goals as well, rather than just “staying in shape.” And as tiring as it is to chase them sometimes, I love that I have the opportunity to show my kids how important fitness is.
5. Name one goal and/or personal record you would like to accomplish through CrossFit.
- Well, after 17.2, who wouldn’t say a muscle up?! So those. If I can choose a second goal, I’m going with pistols. I’d also like to complete Murph with my weighted vest.
6. Favorite CrossFit moment so far?
- I had so much fun competing in the Capital Takeover over the 4th of July weekend with Maddy as my partner last year. I also love all of the holiday WODs that we do, whether it be the 12 Days of Crossfit, Halloween WOD at the pumpkin patch, hero WODs, etc.
7. What is your least favorite WOD to date?
- 16.5 was pretty bad… thrusters + burpees = the worst! But they all contribute to forward progress 🙂
8. What do you like most about Capital City CrossFit?
- Too easy; all of the people. I love the energy and genuine support of other athletes and their goals. Plus, everyone has such great personalities and is fun to spend time with both in and out of the gym.
9. Favorite movement?
- Pull-ups and Toes-to-bar.
10. Least favorite movement?
- Squats in general, except OHS.
