October 2017 Athlete of the Month – Joette Manning

Congratulations to Joette Manning, our October 2017 Athlete of the Month!  Joette has been at C3 since June of 2016.  She may have needed an initial push from her daughter Morgan and husband Kenton to get started, but since it is safe to say Joette has drank the CrossFit Kool-aid! She has done nothing but challenge herself since day one.  After only nine months of CrossFit training, she fully participated in the CF Games Open (and did quite well!).  She also completed a full “Murph” this past Memorial Day, when she could have easily scaled down.  Joette is also as consistent as they come, making it to C3 six days a week. Through hard work and consistency, we have seen a major change in her body, and she continues to get stronger and healthier at the age of 63.   Congratulations Joette, it is a well deserved.  Keep up the good work!
1. In general, what is your background?

I live in Pawnee and am married to Kenton. We have 3 adult children and 4 grandchildren. I served four terms on the Pawnee City Council before going back to school at 50 and earning my Masters in Education.

2.Age, Occupation?

I am 63 years old and I am in my tenth year of teaching at St. Agnes School.

3. How did you get to know about CrossFit and why did you start?

My daughter, Morgan, joined Capital City CrossFit and began to tell me how much she loved it . I have always been a cyclist and she and I competed yearly in Memorial’s Women’s Biathlon so she kept telling me I needed to join C3 because I would love it. Kenton joined next and finally , in June 2016 , right before my 62nd birthday, I signed up for the on ramp.

4. How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?

Through CrossFit, I have learned to push myself to be the best version of myself that I can be. I was never a runner and now I can run a mile. I hadn’t jumped rope or lifted weights for years and now I am! I was not very willing to try new skills, but now I am more open to trying. I also lost about 12 lbs. since last October’s nutrition challenge.

5. Name one goal and/or personal record you would like to accomplish through CrossFit.
I would like to be able to do unassisted pull ups in the future.

6. Favorite CrossFit moment so far?

Signing up and participating in the 2016 Open and doing The full Murph this spring.

7. What is your least favorite WOD to date?

Kelly. 150 wallballs was really rough!

8. What do you like most about Capital City CrossFit?

Of course I like the people and the camaraderie I experience while I am working out. I also really like and trust the coaches. They never make me feel like they are tired of telling me how to do a movement. I am sure sometime they are though. I like being able to work out with my family here.

9. Favorite movement?
Toes to Bar and Rowing

10. Least favorite movement?

Back Squats
