Congratulations to our February Athlete of the Month – Maddy Cunningham-Reidy. Maddy has been working hard at C3 for a few years now, and her hard work and persistence is certainly paying off. She is getting stronger and her body composition has improved greatly, particularly over the past 12 months. Maddy has been putting her fitness to the test. In 2017, she competed in her first CrossFit Open, while also competing in local competitions such as the Festivus Games, Capitol Takeover, and Turkey Bash. Maddy and her husband Joe also competed in the 2017 CrossFit Team Series as newlyweds, where they finished 30th place in the state of Illinois for mixed pairs! Congratulations Maddy, the honor is well deserved!

In general, what is your background?
- I was born and raised in Springfield, IL. I went to Springfield High School then attended Western Illinois University. I joined the Illinois Army National Guard which is how I met my swolemate Laura. I married Joe Reidy in September of last year. Step-mom to two rambunctious girls and dog mom to four fur babies (yes that is why I am always covered in dog hair) …plus two cats.
2. Age, Occupation?
- I am 31 years old. I work for the Springfield Police Department as a Patrol Officer on midnights.
-
How did you get to know about CrossFit and why did you start?
- I learned about Crossfit through other members of the Springfield Police Department. They suggested C3 and on a whim I stopped in. The coach at the time, Zach, told me the first on-ramp class for the month started in 1 hour. I went home, changed my clothes, and came back! The best part is I stopped in with Joe and Zach asked if my dad was interested in joining too!

How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?
- Simply put ..it’s addicting. I cannot wait to see what the next day brings, how I can or have improved, and I am always setting new goals. I am the strongest I have ever been. I wish I would have started earlier in life. The best part is that I have met several people through Crossfit that I know consider friends.
-
Name one goal and/or personal record you would like to accomplish through CrossFit.
- I have too many and I am currently all over the place in trying to improve each one. If I had to pick one I would have to say do a muscle up …still pretty far from that one though.
-
Favorite CrossFit moment so far?
- Probably 17.3. I scaled it and the two movements were jumping chest to bar pulls up and snatches. If you completed three rounds before a certain time was up you moved on to the next weight or rep scheme. I made it to the last three rounds and was struggling really hard with …well all of it. I was the last person still working out during the Noon class and everybody kept cheering me on. It was also the first time I snatched over 100 pounds. It goes to show the power of the community and the power of the open. It was one of the first times I was really proud of myself.

What is your least favorite WOD to date?
- Anything with rowing in it. All that rowing and you go nowhere!
-
What do you like most about Capital City CrossFit?
- The community and coaches. A member found the house I currently live in, convinced my husband I needed it, and was our realtor throughout the whole process. Another member is part of an organization that we found two of our dogs through and acted as the liaison to placing those dogs in our home and we couldn’t be happier. It’s the overall camaraderie, the friendships made, the help when you need it, the push on days you don’t want to, the belief you can do something when you think you can’t. It is the coaches. They are always looking when you think they aren’t and wanting you to be a better version of yourself. Simply put you will not get an experience or the results in any other gym than you will get in Capital City Crossfit.

Favorite movement?
- Squats…SQUATS …squats. Thick thighs don’t lie.
-
Least favorite movement?
- Double unders and toes and toes to bars. I haven’t figured out how to breathe during either of these. I am the one hunched over trying not to die during any WOD involving them.
